Reinhold Friedrich: Hindemith - Concerto for trumpet, bassoon and string orchestra - I. Allegro spiritoso

HINDEMITH, Paul

Concerto for trumpet, bassoon and string orchestra (trumpet, bassoon and piano reduction)

I. Allegro spiritoso - Agitato

Reinhold Friedrich, professor

Josep Gómez Alemany, trumpet

María Bernal Sandoval, bassoon

Óscar Martín Castro, accompanying pianist

The masterclass by Friedrich starts with a brief correction regarding the attacks, sometimes they are too sharp and also it is necessary giving more importance to the singing. Afterwards, the professor comments the necessary balance between the two soloist instruments, and he makes some corrections to the pianist. Many times, Hindemith writes different rhythms and beats for each instrument. Besides, trumpet can play little steps in relation to the phrasing and dynamics.
Moreover, there are some indications regarding the sound quality, tuning and cues. The student asks for the appropriate type of sound in a certain solo part, and then the explanation leads to some comments on Bruckner’s 5th Symphony, Andris Nelsons and the last concert conducted by Claudio Abbado.
